Department of Diaspora Affairs in the World Zionist Organization is responsible for the development and strengthening of the relationship between world Jewry and Israel, based on a view that considers Zionism to be part of a complete Jewish identity and believes that it is an idea that every Jew can connect to.
The department strives to enable an open and genuine discussion of questions relating to the future of the fulfillment of the Zionist vision, the Jewish people, the Zionist movement and the position and role of the State of Israel. This is accomplished through the development of a variety of educational programs that encompass many areas and debate major dilemmas. The Department of Diaspora Activities engages in activity on five continents, in small and large Jewish communities, through the work of dozens of Israeli emissaries and local employees, and in cooperation with the various Zionist Federations and delegations in communities around the world.
Our flagship program Beit Ha’am gives educators and facilitators a large set of tools for leading meaningful discussions on personal identity and connection with the Jewish people and Israel. Tachles is an innovative educational program that offers learners a hands-on opportunity to experience and practice simple everyday Hebrew that they will be able to use when they visit Israel. Cooking Hebrew, a program currently running in over 15 locations allows people to combine their love for food with their love of the Hebrew language. We can also take you on a fascinating journey in the footsteps of Theodor Herzl in our program Leadership with an Eye to the Future, where participants learn about the circumstances that led Herzl to become the Zionist movement’s most important leader. To reach some of the smaller more isolated Jewish communities we have Mochileros, a program which allows young Israelis to volunteer in South American Jewish communities for brief periods of time.
The department’s programs vary and develop according to local needs and the department’s vision.
